The Spanish Council of Ministers will approve a new edition of the successful “Young Summer” (Verano Joven) program next Tuesday. This program will once again offer attractive discounts on train and bus travel for all young people aged 18 to 30. The aim is to make it easier for young people to travel within Spain, promote public transport, and boost national tourism.
Registrations Start Soon: How to Secure Your Discount Code for “Young Summer”
After official approval by the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility will soon launch a dedicated website. All interested young people must register there to receive a personal code. This code is the key to discounted tickets valid for travel between July 1 and September 30, 2025. Demand is expected to be high, as in previous years, so timely registration is advisable.
Budget and Expected Discounts: What “Young Summer” 2025 Offers
Sources from the Ministry of Transport indicate that the discounts will largely resemble those of last year. However, the exact percentages of the reduction for the various train and bus lines will only be announced on Tuesday. The program, now in its third edition, is the result of intensive negotiations between the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Finance and has been allocated a budget of 120 million euros – 10 million euros less than in 2024.
Last year, “Young Summer” enabled significant savings:
- Up to 90% discount on the cost of regular bus services on state routes.
- Up to 90% discount for conventional Media Distancia trains and metric gauge networks.
- 50% discount on Avant train tickets.
- 50% discount, with a maximum of 30 euros per ticket, for long-distance and high-speed train travel with all railway operators, including Renfe, Ouigo, and Iryo.
- There was also a 50% discount on one of the Interrail passes, the Global Flexible for 10 days in two months, if purchased through Renfe.
Who Can Benefit from “Young Summer”? Age Limits and Residency Rules
An important innovation introduced in 2024 and maintained for 2025 is the expansion of eligibility. Not only young Spaniards and EU citizens residing in Spain can benefit from the advantages, but also individuals from non-EU countries who have legal residency here. Specifically, beneficiaries must have been born between January 1, 1995, and December 31, 2007.
Program Objectives: Sustainability, Personal Development, and Tourism Promotion
The Ministry emphasizes that the “Young Summer” program pursues multiple goals:
- Reduction of private vehicle use: This contributes to reducing emissions and traffic accidents.
- Promotion of personal development: Traveling to new places and cultures is intended to broaden the horizons of young people.
- Strengthening the national tourism and cultural sector: The program stimulates the local economy in tourist regions.
The successes of previous years speak for themselves: In 2023, 2.3 million young people registered for the program. The number of trips increased from 4 million in 2023 to an impressive 5.2 million in 2024. Of these, 65% were by train and 35% by bus. Last year, 7,142 Interrail passes were also sold with these discounts.
