The National Police arrested a 28-year-old Dutch fugitive in Benidorm (Alicante), against whom a European Arrest Warrant (OEDE) had been issued by the Dutch authorities for illegal possession of weapons.

The requesting country issued the arrest warrant in mid-April after the fugitive failed to comply with a previous ruling. Officers from Benidorm’s Civil Security Brigade arrested the fugitive after observing his evasive behavior in their presence and receiving confirmation that a European arrest warrant was out for him.

The fugitive committed the offenses, for which he was sentenced to three years in prison in the first instance, in January 2024, when he was apprehended by Dutch police with a handgun without the required license.

The fugitive had left the Netherlands and traveled to Spain while he still had four of the nine months he was sentenced to. The 28-year-old was transferred to the Central Instruction Court of the National Court, which is responsible for conducting the proceedings for his subsequent extradition.
