The car is an important ally when shopping. In Spain, many people use their vehicles to go to supermarkets and conveniently transport their purchases without having to walk home with a heavy load. What drivers may not be aware of, however, is that the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) also monitors what happens in such situations.
Although it may seem absurd to many, traffic police can also issue fines for performing an everyday activity after shopping. For example, a fine can be incurred if a driver leaves their shopping bags next to their vehicle while they stow the remaining items in the trunk.
Fine for Leaving Shopping Bags Next to Your Car
The General Traffic Regulations, specifically Article 12, paragraph 2, state that it is prohibited to throw, place, or leave objects or materials on the road that could obstruct or endanger traffic. This includes leaving shopping bags on the ground while they stow the remaining items in the trunk. The reason for this is that it can be an obstacle for other drivers trying to park.
This act is classified as a minor offense and can be punished with a fine of €80. This amount can be reduced by 50% if payment is made early, thus reducing the financial burden. It should also be noted that carrying a loose object in an inappropriate location in your car can also result in a penalty. In this case, the fine is slightly higher and can be up to €200.
