Summers in Spain are getting hotter, and the government is responding with a smart initiative to keep citizens cool while reducing energy consumption. The Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) will support households with up to 300 Euros for upgrading their old, inefficient air conditioning units in 2025. It’s a win-win situation for you and the environment!

What’s the Deal with This Program?

This initiative is part of Spain’s broader goal to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The “Air Conditioning Renovation Plan 2025” aims to replace outdated units with modern, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly alternatives. This way, you not only contribute to a better climate in your home but also to global climate protection.

How Much Can You Save?

The amount of the grant varies by Autonomous Community, but the savings can be significant:

  • Madrid: Here, you can receive up to €300, covering a generous 60% of the purchase price – a real bargain!
  • Aragón: Residents of this region can expect grants between €150 and €300, covering up to 25% of the unit costs.
  • Barcelona: The Catalan capital is expected to follow suit in mid-2025, similar to 2024. Keep an eye out for official announcements on canviclimatic.gencat.cat.

It is anticipated that other regions across the country will also offer similar incentives. Therefore, it’s worth monitoring your local government websites to avoid missing any important announcements.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for this valuable grant, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Age of the AC Unit: Your existing air conditioning unit must be older than 5 years. The program focuses on replacing outdated and less efficient devices to achieve the greatest energy savings.
  • New Unit: The new unit must have an energy rating of at least A+ for cooling and A for heating. This ensures that the new units contribute to lower energy consumption and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Proper Recycling: You must provide proof that your old unit has been properly recycled. This underscores the environmental aspect of the program.
  • Authorized Installer: The installation of the new air conditioning unit must be carried out by a professional authorized in Madrid’s Plan Cambia 360 or a comparable regional program. This ensures compliance with technical standards and safety regulations.
  • Tax Requirements: Applicants should not have any outstanding tax debts and must not have received similar grants for the same unit, to avoid duplicate funding.

When and How to Apply?

As in previous years, the application window for the 2025 program is expected to open in mid-year, likely in June or July.

Where to Apply:

  • For Madrid: Visit the Plan Cambia 360 website.
  • For Barcelona and Catalonia: Keep an eye on canviclimatic.gencat.cat or contact the Barcelona Housing Office.
  • For national updates: Information can be found on the IDAE website at https://www.idae.es/ or on the energy portal of your respective Autonomous Community.

What Documents Do You Need for the Application?

Prepare the following documents to ensure a smooth application process:

  • The fully completed application form
  • Invoices for the purchase and installation of the new air conditioning unit
  • The energy certificate from the installer
  • A copy of your ID (DNI/NIE) and your bank details
  • Proof that the old unit has been recycled

The official start dates and exact deadlines for the 2025 program have not yet been announced. It is advisable to proactively inquire with your regional energy agency, as application deadlines and procedures may vary by Autonomous Community. Take this opportunity to prepare your home for the upcoming hot summers and save money at the same time!
