The Iberian Peninsula is grappling with an unprecedented heatwave. Spain has officially broken its highest temperature record for the month of June. The municipality of El Granado in Huelva, near the Portuguese border, registered an astounding 46 degrees Celsius, as reported by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), pending final validation of the data.

Historic Record Surpassed: Huelva Hotter Than Seville in 1965

The recorded 46 ºC significantly surpasses Spain’s previous June record of 45.2 ºC, measured in Seville in June 1965. Aemet specified that the peak heat was reached between 2:30 PM and 3:00 PM, after initial reports of 45.8 ºC, with the final confirmed value slightly higher.

The Heatwave Continues: Where Temperatures Are Still Rising

This current heatwave, the first of the summer, is expected to persist and even intensify on Sunday. The Ebro, Tagus, Guadiana, and Guadalquivir river valleys, as well as the Genil basin, are particularly affected, with temperatures predicted to exceed 40 degrees Celsius. A significant temperature increase is also anticipated on the Cantabrian slope.

High Temperatures Expected Nationwide

Maximum temperatures will remain significantly above average across large parts of the northern plateau, the northeast, the southern half of the peninsula, and inland Galicia, reaching or exceeding 34-36 degrees. According to Aemet’s forecasts, minimum temperatures are not expected to drop below 20 degrees along the Ebro coast, the Mediterranean coast, and the southern half, with the exception of the southeastern mountain ranges.
