A remarkable story of honesty and integrity unfolded this week in a Mercadona supermarket car park in Saragossa. A 67-year-old pensioner named Jesús Subías found a bag containing 20,000 euros and did not hesitate to return the money. This extraordinary event highlights the importance of righteousness in our society.
An Unusual Discovery in the Mercadona Car Park
Jesús Subías, who entered the Mercadona car park in Saragossa to do his shopping, observed another man dropping a bag. Intending to find the presumed owner inside the supermarket, Subías picked up the bag. However, he initially could not locate the man. As he stood in line to pay for his groceries and was about to hand the bag to the cashier, he peeked inside and made an astonishing discovery: several bundles of banknotes totaling a significant sum of 20,000 euros.
“I saw that it was a bag of money because there was more than a hand’s worth of weight in the bundles of notes,” Subías reported to Heraldo de Aragón in an interview.
Surprised and slightly unsettled – the thought that the money might be “from the mafia” briefly crossed his mind – Subías quickly covered the unexpected wealth with cat food in his shopping trolley.
The Path to Return: A Gesture of Honesty
Given the unusual situation, Jesús Subías decided to contact a friend, a former police officer, for advice. His friend immediately advised him to take the money to the nearest police station, which Subías promptly did.
A short time later, the person who had lost the money appeared at Mercadona asking about a lost white plastic bag. Through cooperation with the police, contact was established. It turned out that the 20,000 euros were the day’s takings from a fruit and vegetable company in Mercazaragoza, which an employee was supposed to deposit at the bank.
The man’s relief was immense. As Jesús Subías recounted, the grateful man warmly embraced him and expressed his deep appreciation for Subías’ remarkable honesty.
More Than Just Money: A Lesson in Integrity
Jesús Subías was visibly pleased with his action. “Very grateful, very happy, and very glad,” the pensioner described his feelings. His honest gesture is a shining example that righteousness and decency are still of great importance today. This story from Saragossa reminds us that good deeds are often the greatest reward.
