The General Directorate of Transport (DGT) has updated its regulations on overnight parking, establishing fines of up to €600 for those who enter areas not authorized for camping. This measure aims to regulate a practice that has gained popularity, particularly since the rise of caravanning in Spain following the pandemic.

Differences between overnight stays and camping

While overnight stays are permitted anywhere as long as the vehicle is properly parked, camping requires compliance with specific regulations that vary depending on the location. A vehicle correctly parked for the night must have valid insurance and have passed the Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV), thus removing time limits on this practice.

Camping, on the other hand, is subject to restrictions based on local regulations that establish the maximum permitted length of stay. According to the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE), violations of camping regulations in protected areas result in higher fines. Therefore, it is important to familiarize yourself with the specific regulations of each location in advance.

High fines in the Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands represent a special case, as fines range from €750 to €1,500 due to the congestion in certain residential areas. However, an exception applies if people use their vehicles as permanent accommodation and are classified as vulnerable by social services.
