At Atocha station, many travelers who were unable to catch their train are patiently waiting with their luggage on the surrounding terraces while enjoying a snack.
At Puerta del Sol, the metro station and the Cercanías station have been evacuated; access is closed except for a small area and is monitored by security forces.
Some shops continue to operate and sell goods despite having no electricity, while others, such as the Apple Store, have decided to close their shutters.
At various establishments, attempts are being made to rescue people from elevators while police continue to arrive.
The search for taxis on the streets of Madrid is frantic, as other public transport is unavailable. At Chamartín station, taxi drivers are bustling, while passengers are forced to carry large suitcases because the escalators are out of service.
Most passengers and crew are waiting for service to resume with remarkable composure, sitting on their cell phones.
On Madrid’s Gran Vía, traffic lights are operating normally, although traffic is being directed by police officers who are keeping one lane closed.
Nearby, tourists and locals are moving calmly past security guards moving between various points.
Some schools have also contacted parents to inform them that they can pick up their children.
