Iberdrola and the Community of Madrid have jointly taken a decisive step towards sustainable mobility: the inauguration of the largest fast charging station for electric vehicles in Leganés, Madrid, and one of Spain’s most comprehensive charging facilities. This project underscores the growing commitment to a greener future and solidifies Madrid’s pioneering role in electric mobility.
Ultra-Fast Charging for Everyone: Details of the New Mega Charging Station
The new facility in Leganés boasts an impressive 47 charging points, 15 of which are designed as ultra-fast charging points. These allow for an electric vehicle battery to be charged to 80% in less than fifteen minutes, or to gain a range of 200 kilometers in just five minutes of plugging in. The offering is complemented by ten fast charging points that enable charging in half an hour, as well as 22 semi-fast charging points.
Iberdrola was not only responsible for the installation but also for the operation and maintenance of the charging station. All 47 parking spaces are equipped with solar panels to maximize energy efficiency and supply up to 100 families or local businesses with renewable energy, leading to significant cost savings.
The specific distribution of charging points includes:
- Eight ultra-fast charging points with 350 kW
- Seven ultra-fast charging points with 240 kW
- Ten fast charging points with 60 kW
- 22 semi-fast charging points with 22 kW
Its strategic location right next to the Parque Polvoranca commuter train station in Leganés allows users to flexibly adapt the charging type to the duration of their parking time.
Funded by EU Resources: A Project of National Significance
This forward-looking project is being realized within the framework of the “MOVES Singular Projects II” funding program, which is part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and financed by the European Union through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE). This highlights the initiative’s importance for the national energy and transport transition.
Official Opening: Madrid’s Leadership in Sustainable Mobility
The center was officially opened by the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Local Administration, Miguel Ángel García Martín, along with representatives from Iberdrola and members of the Leganés city council. García Martín emphasized that this new charging station perfectly complements the existing facilities in Pozuelo de Alarcón and the recently announced station on Paseo de la Castellana. “This charging station solidifies the Community of Madrid’s leadership role in Spain regarding sustainable mobility. It is a great step forward for Leganés, but also a success and a source of pride for the entire region,” said the Minister.
Iberdrola as a Pioneer in Electric Mobility
Antonio Armengot, Delegate of Iberdrola Clients in Madrid, stressed that electric mobility requires public and private partnerships to accelerate citizen well-being and contribute to improving air quality and sustainable urban development. “At Iberdrola, we were pioneers in promoting electric mobility, and today we are leaders in public charging with more than 9,500 operational points located on main roads and in cities, as well as in small towns and secondary roads,” explained Armengot.
The Leganés charging station is the second public land charging hub that Iberdrola will operate on a lease basis for the public company Planifica Madrid. The facility is located in a privileged area with a catchment of 750,000 residents between the cities of Leganés, Getafe, Fuenlabrada, and Alcorcón. Its connection to the Parque Polvoranca commuter train station and the M-406, M-407, M-409, and M-50 motorways will benefit both Madrid residents and travelers and visitors. The area covers 1,260 square meters and is part of the PAU Arroyo Culebro, a consolidated residential area with over 3,600 homes, adjacent to the M-50.
