A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 surprised the entire province of Almería this Monday morning at 7:13 AM, startling numerous residents from their sleep. The National Geographic Institute (IGN) located the epicenter at a shallow depth of just two kilometers, which further intensified the impact of the tremor for the population. The effects were widespread and led to a flood of reactions on social media.

Noticeable Tremors and Widespread Reach

Immediately after the earthquake, numerous eyewitnesses took to social media to share their experiences. Comments such as “In Roquetas De Mar it was very noticeable and lasted a few seconds, the hotel room moved everything” illustrate the intensity of the event. Many users described the tremor as “strong” and “surprisingly long-lasting.” A resident of Almería reported that “the whole house was balanced,” highlighting the perceptible movement throughout the building.

Earthquake Also Felt in Surrounding Provinces

The tremors were not limited to Almería. Reports from internet users confirm that the earthquake was also perceived in the neighboring provinces of Granada, Jaén, and Murcia. “It was felt in Granada, but well, it lasted a very long time,” wrote lawyer María José Arcas-Sariot as early as 7:33 AM. Perceptions were also reported from Ibros, Jaén, and the capital Granada. This widespread perceptibility indicates a significant spread of seismic waves and underlines the strength of the earthquake.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation. Further information on potential aftershocks or damages is expected shortly.
