Spain is witnessing a remarkable increase in Adults-Only hotels. What once started as a niche offering has become a true trend. But is this development, celebrated by many as a sign of modernity and relaxation, really as unproblematic as it seems? We take a closer look at the phenomenon of “child-free” accommodations and the social dynamics behind them.

From Niche Market to Mass Phenomenon: The Numbers Speak Volumes

In 2023, the number of Adults-Only hotels in Spain surged from 123 to over 700. An impressive increase that shows the high demand for child-free vacations. Often marketed under the English label “Only Adults,” this aims to convey the impression of a trendy concept rather than potential discrimination. Simultaneously, the number of holiday accommodations that allow pets has also risen by 22%. These figures reflect a shift in traveler preferences but also raise questions about the societal implications.

Need for Peace or Intolerance? The Debate about Children on Vacation

Why this boom in Adults-Only hotels? A common opinion is that more and more adults are convinced that children are incompatible with the much-needed peace and quiet during vacations. Is it an increased intolerance among adults, more annoying behavior from children, or simply overwhelmed parents? Opinions differ. While some travelers feel bothered by splashing children in the pool, many parents emphasize that they do try to teach their children manners. However, children learn rules at their own pace, and even if told twenty times, it’s not always immediately internalized.

The Legal Grey Area and Social Exclusion

Although excluding children through the so-called “right of admission” raises legal questions, the Adults-Only hotel business seems to be thriving. In an era where we pride ourselves on the inclusion of minorities, a new “ghetto” for families is paradoxically emerging. For the little ones, often the only space left is in hotels with entertainment and a menu full of Chicken Nuggets.

But the truth is: if anyone truly needs vacation and relaxation, it’s often the parents. A child running on the beach and getting some sand on a towel should not seriously impair an adult’s relaxation. True relaxation does not mean creating a tailor-made, child-free world for oneself. Such a mindset can be interpreted as childish.

Social Responsibility and the Future of Coexistence

The Adults-Only vacation model can be understood as a form of social exclusion. It promotes the formation of “ghettos” and undermines coexistence in a world populated by children. When we discriminate against children based on their age, we are essentially teaching them that anything you don’t like can simply be pushed aside with money.

Furthermore, there is the emotional impact on children when they encounter rejection during a phase of life where they should be building acceptance and, thus, security. Mutual respect is a cornerstone of education. Children need to learn it, but adults cannot stop practicing it by excluding children simply because they do not behave like adults. All of us, whether parents or childless, bear a social responsibility for future generations. One cannot take a break from this responsibility, even on vacation.
