A man armed with a knife was shot dead by police after attempting to rob a taxi driver at Gran Canaria Airport, the Canary Islands’ Supreme Council confirmed in an official statement.

The incidents occurred at approximately 4:50 p.m. at the entrances to the international airport terminal. National Police officers were forced to use their firearms after the man acted violently and allegedly attempted to rob a taxi driver with a knife near the airport.

During the police operation, the attacker lunged at the officers with the weapon, who were then “forced to repel the attack by using their firearms as required.”

Emergency services from both the airport and the Canary Islands Health Service were immediately alerted, and they attempted to resuscitate the man. Unfortunately, they could only confirm his death.

Members of the National Police, including officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, the Scientific Police Brigade, and the Homicide Unit, remained at the scene and initiated the relevant investigations.

The Judicial Commission was also activated, and the National Police continues to work intensively to clarify the incident.
