After a chaotic Monday in which the theft, or “sabotage” according to the government, of copper cables in several parts of Toledo disrupted the high-speed line between Madrid and Andalusia, causing hours of delays for thousands of passengers, Renfe faces new complications on Tuesday.
A breakdown caused by an axle drifting while an empty train was maneuvering in the Can Tunis depot in Barcelona has affected at least two Renfe trains and four Iryo trains, sources from both companies confirmed. Renfe said passengers on the two affected trains—one from Barcelona to Seville and one from Barcelona to A Coruña, scheduled for Tuesday morning—will be transferred to other trains with additional capacity.
Technicians are working to resolve the incident “as quickly as possible.” At the same time, Iryo’s first four scheduled trains on the Barcelona-Madrid route have accumulated delays of approximately three and a half hours; the company aims to reduce these delays “as soon as possible” to normalize service.
