The Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs, and Agenda 2030 has ordered Airbnb to block more than 65,000 illegal advertisements for tourist accommodations hosted on its platform.
The department, headed by Pablo Bustinduy, has ordered the multinational company’s Irish subsidiary to remove a total of 65,935 advertisements, as they are considered illegal and violate the regulations governing the advertising of tourist accommodations.
In particular, the regulations of the various autonomous communities in which the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has identified these advertisements are being violated. In all cases, these are entire houses used for tourism purposes; there are no advertisements for individual rooms.
Airbnb has filed a lawsuit to prevent the blocking. The Superior Court of Justice of Madrid (TSJM) has now ruled on the initial decision and issued an order supporting the measures taken by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. In response to the ministry’s instructions, the TSJ is calling on Airbnb to immediately remove 5,800 listings for tourist apartments.
