Cinema admissions in Spain fell by four million viewers to 72.9 million in 2024, compared to a total of 76.7 million in 2023. Spanish cinema improved its figures compared to the previous year, with 13.6 million viewers (13.4 in 2023) and 85.6 million at the box office (82.4 in 2023).

These are the figures published by the Ministry of Culture this Thursday in its Cinematography Statistics: Production, Exhibition, Distribution, and Development for 2024. Admissions in 2024 were 72.9 million, with gross revenues of €484.6 million, compared to €493 million in 2023. Spanish cinema, in particular, grew in 2024, both in terms of the number of films screened and the audience. The 658 films screened last year reached a total of 13.6 million viewers, indicating an increase in both audience numbers and box office revenue, which reached €85.6 million. This represents an increase of 1.2 percent and 4 percent, respectively, compared to the previous year.

According to the results, the number of films screened in one of the 3,566 cinemas across the country was 2,403, including 735 premieres, representing an increase of 2% in films screened and 1% in premieres compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the document reveals that Saturday was the day of the week with the highest influx of viewers, followed by Wednesday. The highest attendance was recorded on Saturdays and Sundays.

Gender Gap

In the context of equality policies, statistics show a gradual narrowing of the gender gap in this sector. In 2024, 46.5 percent of feature films produced in Spain were directed or co-written by women.

According to the document, 29.8 percent of feature films produced in Spain were directed or co-directed by a woman, and in 44.7 percent of them, women were involved in the development of the script. Thus, the number of feature films with female participation in the script or direction increased by 4.7 percentage points compared to 2023.
