The coastal town of Almuñécar in Granada was named the best place in Spain for retirement in the 2025 Global Retirement Index.
According to the index published by International Living, Spain ranks sixth overall for retirement. With its sunny climate and diverse landscapes to explore, it offers breathtaking views of deserts, rolling hills, vibrant cities, and tranquil coastal towns.
Compared to other countries, life in Spain is “affordable”; according to the publication, you can live a modest life on a monthly budget of just $2,000 (approximately €1,763), which is significantly cheaper than in many regions of the United States.
In addition, Spain highlights that healthcare allows you to purchase health insurance at significantly lower prices than in other European and North American countries. After a five-year residency, you are also entitled to social benefits.
The European nation is also credited with a high quality of life, regular air connections to the US and Europe, and strong political stability.
Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Almuñécar has been named the best city in Spain to spend your retirement years, especially if you have a pension of €1,000. Enjoy relaxing hours with a good book on sandy beaches like Playa de San Cristóbal or Playa del Pozuelo. The city also offers a great coastal cycle route and numerous festivals and cultural events for entertainment.
Last year, the publication “Moving to Spain” named Almuñécar as the most recommended destination for retirement, with “incredible weather, a low cost of living, and no wealth tax.”
As many retirees now live in the city, the number of services offered specifically for seniors is also growing.
