Since early July, almost 9,000 bottles of Corona beer have been stored at the Les Borges Blanques police station in Lleida, and the Mossos d’Esquadra are facing a mystery: Who are the rightful owners of this enormous quantity of stolen beer? The search for answers began on the AP-2, near Vinaixa, where officers discovered an abandoned truck with a destroyed wheel.

Trail Leads to Professional Truck Thieves

Inside the abandoned truck, police found more than 300 crates of beer, a cargo that immediately raised suspicion of a specialized gang of truck thieves. These criminals, often referred to as “advance groups,” specialize in robbing trucks on the open road. Despite the apparent theft and the enormous quantity of stolen goods, no one has yet filed a complaint or claimed the beers. The bottles are therefore still waiting to be collected at the police facilities.

Suspects in Sight: Tools and Criminal Records Speak Volumes

After finding the damaged truck, investigators discovered another abandoned vehicle just a few kilometers away. Shortly thereafter, they located a third vehicle with three occupants. These individuals claimed to have had a breakdown and denied any connection to the abandoned truck and the beer cargo.

The Mossos identified the three individuals, and the results were revealing: two of them were already known to the police for similar robberies using the “opening method” – a typical approach in truck thefts. Furthermore, the officers found tools in the suspects’ vehicle that could be precisely used for such heists. Despite the incriminating evidence, the individuals were released after identification, as no official complaint or report from the owners of the allegedly stolen beer has yet been filed. Investigations are ongoing.
