A devastating fire in Granyena de Segarra has led to significant consequences for the region of Catalonia. Nearly 10,000 residents from four surrounding villages – Cervera, Granyanella, La Curullada, and Fonolleres – have been forced into a preventative lockdown due to the immediate danger. The blaze, which originated from a burning vehicle, has rapidly spread, scorching 247 hectares, primarily agricultural land.
Civil Protection on High Alert: Multiple Blazes Challenge Catalonia
The Generalitat has activated the Infocat fire plan due to the critical situation and several simultaneous fire incidents across Catalonia. In addition to the major fire in Granyena, other active fires are reported in Sant Esteve Sesrovires and Sant Salvador de Guardiola (both in Barcelona).
Around 5:00 PM, Civil Protection sent an EsAlert warning to mobile phones in Cervera. This lockdown order includes an urgent request to keep doors and windows closed, avoid going out onto the streets, and contact emergency number 112 immediately if assistance is needed. Residents of Granyanella, La Curullada, and Fonolleres, near the Granyena fire, were also strongly urged to stay indoors and avoid traveling to the affected areas.
The inferno in Granyena de Segarra ignited on Saturday around 1:27 PM when a vehicle located next to an unmowed field caught fire – a chain of unfortunate circumstances.
Emergency Crews Working Tirelessly: Battling the Firefront
Firefighters have deployed an impressive 44 ground units and eight air units to contain the Granyena fire. Their operational area covers approximately 410 hectares, although current preliminary assessments by Rural Agents indicate about 180 hectares, mainly agricultural land, are directly affected.
The devastating impact of the fire also necessitated the closure of the A-2 highway between Cervera and Tàrrega. Diversions are being signposted in Soses to the AP-2 to reroute traffic and ensure safety.

Additional Fire Hotspots in Catalonia: Traffic Disruptions and Warnings
Another fire broke out around 2:04 PM in Sant Salvador de Guardiola near the C-37z. This incident involved a warehouse with agricultural material and vehicles catching fire, with flames quickly spreading to surrounding forest vegetation. Firefighters are on scene with nine ground units and two air units.
Furthermore, a vegetation fire approximately 200 meters from the AP-7 in Martorell (Barcelona) forced the interruption of traffic on the R4 Rodalies line between Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and Martorell Central due to its dangerous proximity to the railway tracks.
Given this precarious situation, the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has issued a strong call for caution in the various affected areas of Catalonia. Especially in municipalities where the lockdown was ordered via mobile alerts, it is of utmost importance to follow all instructions from emergency services. “It is very important to follow all instructions from the emergency services,” he warned, emphasizing “maximum caution.”
