An unbelievable case is shaking the city of Alicante: A young couple allegedly lived for about two months with the body of a 74-year-old retired police officer in his apartment and withdrew around 1,500 euros from his bank account during that time. The National Police have arrested the 33-year-old woman and her 28-year-old husband, who are now charged with a crime against moral integrity and fraud.

Chronology of a Macabre Discovery

The investigation began when the pensioner’s relatives raised the alarm. They had been unable to contact the 74-year-old for an extended period. When they finally entered his house in the Los Ángeles neighborhood, near Lo Morant Park in Alicante, they made a horrific discovery: In one room, they found the severely decomposed body of the man.

The forensic autopsy showed no signs of a violent death, suggesting a natural cause of death. However, due to the advanced state of decomposition, the exact cause of death could not be immediately determined; the results of toxicological examinations are still pending.

The Couple: Guests, then Alleged Perpetrators

Neighbors and relatives reported to the investigators of the Violent Crime Group of the Provincial Police Brigade of Alicante that the deceased had taken in the young couple and their small child, who is just over a year old. However, at the time the body was discovered, the couple had vanished without a trace.

Intensive police searches finally led to the arrest of the couple in Alicante on Wednesday. The accused exercised their right not to testify and spent the night in police custody before being brought before the duty judge on Friday morning.

Legal Consequences and Provisional Release

The competent Instruction Court No. 2 of Alicante has ordered the provisional release of the couple under precautionary measures. According to the criteria of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, they must now report regularly to the court. The couple is being investigated in a case initially classified as a crime against moral integrity and fraud. The final legal classification will be determined by Instruction Court No. 1, which will continue the investigation.

This case highlights the importance of social oversight and the need to pay attention to the well-being of elderly and solitary people in our society.
