President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, described the agreement reached at the World Health Assembly to create the first global pandemic treaty as “historic.” In his Report X, Sánchez emphasized that this pact was an essential step to “protect global health, strengthen multilateralism, and, above all, save lives.” He also underscored: “No one is safe unless everyone is safe.”

Health Minister Mónica García also welcomed the adoption of the treaty and emphasized the importance of Spain’s active participation in these negotiations. According to García, the agreement represents a “victory for public health” that will ensure improved preparation for and response to future health crises.

The main objective of the treaty, which was adopted unanimously, is to strengthen systems for the prevention, surveillance, and response to pandemics. It also aims to ensure equitable access to vaccines, diagnostics, and treatments to avoid the inequalities that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This agreement responds to the urgent need to prevent a recurrence of situations like those experienced during the last health crisis, particularly with regard to the lack of international coordination and basic resources. The World Health Assembly in Geneva adopted this treaty after an intensive negotiation process spanning several years.

In conclusion, Pedro Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to this treaty and to improving global cooperation in public health. He considered this agreement a crucial step forward in protecting humanity from future health threats and ensuring that no one is left behind.
